Isn’t it easy to create a team to develop websites?

Last week, I answered one question from Hessam Shekhasany about the benefits of working as a freelancer instead of getting a regular job. Today, I answer his second question, about creating a team to develop websites instead of working alone.

Here’s the video, and next is my answer.

Work is a commodity, you can hire people to do the work for you

During my Ultimate Marketing Class presentations, I remember telling this to the audience. Because many people believe that, if their services and products are the best, then they will make more money than the competition.

But we all know that’s not true.

The best selling cheeseburgers are from McDonald’s, and they definitely aren’t the best burgers in the world. McDonald’s is the best at selling burgers, not at making them.

As an example, I like to mention Jack Ma, the Chinese billionaire who founded the Alibaba Group, one of the largest e-commerce companies of the world.

Everything started in 1995, when he launched a company to build websites in China. But he didn’t know how to build websites. Instead, he used the help of some of his friends in USA. The business thrived, making US$ 800,000 withing 3 years.

Then, in 1999, he founded the Alibaba group, an online business-to-business marketplace. Again, Jack Ma knew little to nothing about selling things online, as he’s never sold anything over the Internet himself.

But here’s the thing. Even though Jack Ma didn’t know how to make websites or how to sell stuff online, he learned how to sell websites and how to sell a business-to-business marketplace. The actual work was done by a team of professional that were working for him.

So yes, it’s possible to create a team of people to do the work for you.

But, is it easy?

If you want to create a team of professionals to work for you, the first you need to do is, obviously, find the professionals.

Not only they need to have the skills, they need to be trustworthy. They need to deliver exactly what you requested, on time. And unless you have some personal friends who would be interested in working with you, like Jack Ma had his friends in USA, it’s gonna be really hard to find these professionals.

Be ready for a lot of research, interviews, disappointment and frustration.

Second, unless you have a lot of money available to invest in your business, you won’t be able to hire employees, and will outsource the work instead. But then, there’s no bond. Whenever the partnership is not interesting for the professionals you hire, they can leave you at any time, without warning.

And good luck finding good professionals who would agree working for free until the business is making money. You may find partners that would agree to do this, but then they would own the business too.

So, is it possible to create a team of professionals to do the work for you? Yes, it is. Is it easy? Hell no!
